Guam

Small Description:

Information & Flights

Located in the western North Pacific Ocean, Guam is the largest and most populous island in the Mariana Islands archipelago. A US territory, Guam has a storied history with military occupations from Spain, Japan and the United States. Today Guam retains influences from each culture, as well as a strong indigenous Chamorro heritage. Most travelers make the trip to Guam to experience the sunny skies and picturesque beaches — and no matter where you stay on the island, you’re rarely ever more than 15 minutes away from a sandy spot of coastline. Thanks to its remote location, the island offers relatively unspoiled natural beauty and excellent scuba sites.

Guam is divided into several villages, spread out across the island. The northern region is made up of limestone plateaus and two small villages, including Dededo — Guam’s liveliest neighborhood. In the central region, find the capital of Hagatna, where the government resides and most of the metropolitan activities take place. The majority of luxury hotels are located nearby in Tumon Bay, which is also home to Chamorro Village and a popular night market. The southern part of the island is mostly rural and untouched. There’s a beautiful mountain range, waterfalls, hiking trails and a black sand beach on Talofofo Bay.

Diving

The island boasts more than 200 species of coral and 60 dive sites, most of which can be accessed by boat. Scuba enthusiasts will appreciate The Blue Hole, as well as two famous sunken Japanese warships — the Kitzagawa Maru and Tokei Maru. If up for an adventure, the famous Marinas Trench — the world’s deepest point — is located about 338 kilometres off the coast.

Puntan Dos Amantes

Also known as ‘Two Lovers Point,’ this romantic cliff in northern Guam overlooks the Philippine Sea. As the legend goes, two lovers jumped off the cliff after their families forbid them from being together. The site attracts couples from all over the world, who come to admire panoramic views and a symbol of eternal love.

Night Markets

Every Wednesday night, Chamorro Village in Agana comes alive with food and souvenir stands. On Thursday nights, a more local-oriented market featuring Chamorro food can be found at the Santa Teresita Church in Mangilao.

Make a Splash

Water sports are among the most popular activities — look for parasailing, boating, kayaking, dolphin watching, jet skiing, paddle boarding, windsurfing, kiteboarding, and more.

Gef Pa'go Cultural Village

This preserved village celebrates indigenous Chamorro culture with traditional thatched huts and hands-on opportunities to learn how to make local crafts, such as coconut candy and woven textiles.

Guam has no shortage of luxurious hotels and resorts in the main tourist drag, along Tumon Bay. There are several guesthouses and hostels as well, though most of these are located in Hagatna, the village of Harmon, or elsewhere in the southern and central regions.
