Shimojishima is located in the northwest of the Miyako Islands, part of the Ryukyu Islands, in Okinawa Prefecture. Surrounded by clear turquoise water, the island is a popular spot for snorkelling and diving. Nakanoshima Beach

Located in the southwest of the island, Nakanoshima Beach is a natural beach with an abundamce of tropical fish and precious coral reefs below the surface of the clear turquoise water. It is also a popular spot for snorkelling and diving. Be careful not to touch or harm the coral reef and be aware of your own safety as there are no lifeguards on the beach.

Irabu Island

Next to Shimojishima is Irabu Island, and it can easily be accessed by car from Miyako Island via the Irabu Bridge. In the past, the island was only accessible by ferries, leaving many natural sceneries yet to be explored. Enjoy the spectacular views when you drive pass this 3.5km long bridge across the sea.

Tooriike Pond

Adjacent to Shimojishima airport you can find two ponds connected by an underwater cavern which, from a top view, resembles a pair of eyes. As one of the ponds connects to the sea, it has become a popular dive spot for advanced divers. Tooriike pond is recognized as a national scenic location and natural monument. Come explore this rare gem of beauty which lies within a short walk of the airport.

Island Hopping

Shimojishima is part of the Miyako Islands and is connected to nearby islands by different bridges. You can easily access Irabu Island via the new Irabu toll-free bridge. There is even a viewing area for some spectacular views! Cross the Ikema Bridge to be presented with wildlife and natural scenery.

Explore beautiful beaches

Spare an afternoon to chill and relax on one of the beautiful beaches under the warm and inviting sun. Take in the photogenic view of the waterfront at the Sunayama Beach or go snorkeling and scuba diving in the turquoise waters of Yoshino Beach. Be sure not to miss watching the sunset at the Maehama Beach, which is considered one of the best sandy beaches in Japan.

The Beach by 17 End

“17 End” refers to the angle at which the runway from Shimojishima airport extends. You can get a bird’s eye view of the beach as your flight lands. It can be argued that the clearest waters in Japan can be found here. Get ready to be amazed by the beauty of natural wonders.

Diving

The largest group of coral reefs in Japan can be found in Yabiji, the northern part of Miyako Island. During low tide, the reef can be seen above the waters surface and therefore it is also locally known as the “flower garden of the ocean”. Try taking a glass boat tour if you want to view the stunning underwater world in comfort through the boat’s transparent floor.

Sporting events

Besides water sports, there are all kinds of sporting events happening throughout all seasons. In Spring, there is the All Japan Triathlon of Miyakojima. Runners, swimmers and bicyclists will gather at the biggest event on Miyako Island. In Autumn and Winter, there are several marathons in which you can run along the shore while enjoying the emerald green waters of the sea. Beach volleyball competitions are held twice during Summer. Hari, the event to pray for safety of voyage to the God of the sea, happens every June and you can watch dragon boat racing as part of the celebration.

Music Festivals

Miyako Island hosts various music festivals every year, including the Kagisuma Music Convention and the Miyako Island Rock Festival. The exciting performances from popular Japanese artists heat up the island. Be ready to dance along the music and have some fun!

Specialty Food

The island is famous for fresh fruits due to its warm and sunny climate. Take a sip of the banana smoothies made from fresh island bananas. Try the rich and meaty spiny lobsters which are only available in July when it is the peak season. Indulge in the sweetness of the locally grown apple mangos or have a bite of the big and sweet but rare Keitt mango.

There is a wide variety of accommodation options available to choose from. Besides wallet friendly “minshuku” guest houses, you could also opt for luxury hotels and resorts on the island. Large resorts are usually located along the coastline so you can relax with a sea view while enjoy various facilities such as spas and massage, bars or having fine dining experience.

Transportation from Shimojishima Airport to Miyakojima is very convenient. There are several bus routes and rental cars available at the airport to get you around. Taking a taxi to city center costs around 3,500 yen and takes around 25 minutes.
