Ōkunoshima, also known as "Rabbit Island," is a 15-minute boat ride fromTadanoumi Port in Takehara City. Home to about 600 rabbits, the island offers a peaceful, therapeutic escape. Be sure to, buy rabbit food at nearby shops before boarding, as it’s not available on the island.
Ōkunoshima also features "Kyukamura Hotels, where you can find accommodations, enjoy hot springs, and local cuisine. In summer, visitors can relax at the beach resort or take a dip in the outdoor pool. With a circumference of about 4 kilometers, the island offers stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea— perfect for unwind and capture great shots with the rabbits.
The Shimose Art Museum, located in Ōtake City, Hiroshima Prefecture, was designed by architect Shigeru Ban and opened in March 2023. It is about 45-minute from Hiroshima City and 30 minutes from Miyajima. Guided by the concept “Admire art, inside art.” the museum features colourful movable exhibition rooms floating on water. Visitor can also explore the “Émile Gallé Garden”, which is filled with seasonal flowers, as well as relax at the "SEAVIEW TERRACE," which offers panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea islands. Seamlessly blending architecture and art, the Shimose Art Museum is a truly unique cultural destination.
Saijo is one of Japan's "three major sake-producing regions." Just a short walk from JR Saijo Station, seven historic sake breweries line the main street, easily recognised by their iconic white walls and red chimneys. During brewing season, the air is filled with the aroma of sake. Visitors can taste a wide range of sake on-site, including limited edition varieties that sake lovers won't want to miss. In addition to the breweries, the area offers a full culinary experience with sake-inspired dishes like "Bishu Nabe" and sweet treats available along the street.
The Kousanji Museum on Ikuchi Island in Onomichi City was established by businessman Kōsanji Kōzo as a tribute to his mother. A standout feature is "The Hill of Hope," the world’s largest marble—created over 17 years by sculptor Kuetani Ittou. The garden is made with approximately 3,000 tons of Italian marble and centres around the striking "Tower of Hope," shaped like hands in prayer. This stunning white garden blends tradition with modern artistry and has become a popular spot for social media snaps in recent years.
The farm attracts 300,000 visitors annually, making it one of Japan’s top attractions. Spanning approximately 150,000 square meters, it showcases stunning seasonal displays: weeping cherry blossoms and 750,000 tulips in spring, sunflowers in summer, and 7,500 dahlias across 550 varieties alongside colourful chrysanthemums. A popular photo spot, “Heavenly Blue Hill,” is blanketed with vivid blue Western Morning Glories, creating a refreshing, dreamlike scene. In winter, the farm hosts the “Sera Kogen Candle Night,” where a sea of twinkling candles add a romantic glow to the landscape.
Senkoji Temple is a landmark in Onomichi City, known for its striking vermilion main hall and panoramic views of the city. Its bell tower, “Senkoji Shoro,” is recognized as one of the “100 Soundscapes of Japan”. Nearby, the observation deck in Senkoji Park offers spectacular vistas, and the mountaintop “PEAK” has been shortlisted among Japan’s "Top 100 Night Views". Visitors can take the Senkoji Temple Mountain Ropeway from the city centre—a scenic three-minute ride to enjoy the heritage and beauty of Onomichi.
Hiroshima Okonomiyaki, often called the "soul food of Hiroshima," is made by layering a thin batter with cabbage, bean sprouts, pork, yakisoba noodles, eggs, and more. The hearty dish is topped with a rich, sweet sauce for extra flavour and often customised with mayonnaise or green onions. Packed with vegetables, it’s considered a relatively healthy option.
In Naka Ward, Hiroshima City, "Okonomimura" is a must visit-spot, home to 23 Okonomiyaki restaurants, each offering its own take on the dish. The lively atmosphere draws in students on school trips from all over Japan, as well as regular tourists, making it a popular and bustling dining destination.
Hiroshima Prefecture is the largest producer of lemons in Japan. The “Setouchi Lemon”, grown in the region’s warm climate, is known for its mild flavour and edibility, including the peel. One of Hiroshima's signature dishes is "Hiroshima Lemon Hotpot”, which features a lemon-based broth that’s anything but greasy. Beneath the generous slices of lemon lies a rich assortment of ingredients including seasonal vegetables, chicken, Hiroshima oysters, and sea bream from the Seto Inland Sea, making it a mouthwatering dish.
Fried Momiji Manju is a must-try treat from "Momijido" in Miyajima. During production, some Momiji Manju may not come out perfectly shaped. Instead of letting them to go waste, "Momijido" decided to deep-fry them, transforming the pastries into a popular snack to enjoy while strolling around Miyajima.
Each fried Momiji Manju is made to order, offering a delightful texture that is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Classic flavours include red bean, custard cream, and cheese, alongside innovative options like Setouchi lemon and no-bake cheesecake.
Onomichi Ramen is topped with barbecued pork, bamboo shoots and green onions, and served in a delicious, uniquely flavoured soup base. The soy-sauce based broth blends with chicken bones and seafood stock to create a light yet savoury flavour.
What sets Onomichi Ramen apart is the layer of pork back fat floats on top, adding richness and depth to the soy sauce broth. The noodles are flat and smooth, paring perfectly with the broth to deliver a lasting impression.
