Hiring a foreign domestic helper takes more than booking flights, signing contracts, and arranging accommodation. If your helper falls ill, gets injured at work, or leaves unexpectedly and needs to be replaced, the additional costs and responsibilities can quickly fall on you as an employer.
From arranging your helper's journey to supporting everyday household and postnatal care needs, SmartHelper Plus helps protect your helper's wellbeing while supporting your responsibilities as an employer.
Under the Employees' Compensation Ordinance of Hong Kong SAR, employers are legally required to maintain Employees' Compensation benefits for their employees.
For foreign domestic helpers, employers are required to cover medical expenses if the helper falls ill or gets injured. The government strongly recommends arranging a proper, comprehensive helper protection plan — one that satisfies the requirements of the Employees' Compensation Ordinance and helps cover unexpected medical and hospitalisation costs.
The applicant of the SmartHelper Plus Insurance must be the employer of the insured helper.
Yes. Under Section 1 – Employees' Compensation, you are covered worldwide for employer liability towards your foreign domestic helper, up to HKD100,000,000, when your helper accompanies you or your family overseas by mutual agreement and continues performing household duties during the trip. Coverage does not apply if your helper suffers bodily injury or death caused by an accident or illness unrelated to household duties during the overseas trip.
AXA is not liable for any judgment against you issued by a court outside the Hong Kong SAR, nor for any judgment made within the Hong Kong SAR to enforce a judgment made outside it. Before taking your helper abroad, please check the relevant visa requirements and local laws of your destination, and pay close attention to your insurance arrangements — we strongly recommend arranging separate travel insurance for your helper to cover medical expenses, personal belongings, and personal liability while overseas.
Yes. Cancer and critical illnesses are covered under Hospital and Surgical Expenses and Clinical Expenses, provided they are not pre-existing before the policy effective date. You can also enhance your medical expenses coverage by adding the optional Supplementary Medical (Critical Illness) Benefit.
No. Each SmartHelper Plus policy covers only one local domestic helper in this situation, so you will need to apply separately for each helper. However, if you employ different local domestic helpers who work at different time slots at the same place of employment within the same period of insurance, one SmartHelper Plus policy can cover all of them.
